Raphaël JUSTEWICZ
Trained as a landscape architect and architect at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University and McGill University, these virtual three-dimensional constructions have a direct lineage to axonometric drawings constructed early at the office of Richard Meier & Partners in New York City. A strong advocate for sketch models in the design process, these and three-dimensional physical models mark my professional expertise of many years each at the offices of Mikyoung Kim Design in Boston, Sasaki Associates in San Francisco, EDAW in New York City, and Janet Rosenberg & Studio in Toronto; along with brief yet memorable periods at Martha Schwartz Inc. in Cambridge, Massachusetts and Peter Walker and Partners, in Cambridge and Berkeley, California. More recently, I have collaborated with Michel Kagan Architectures in Paris and OBRA Architects in New York City.
A Creative Process
I have come to use the computer program known as "Rhino" (short for Rhinoceros, and developed by Robert McNeal & Associates) to explore the contexts in which I have found myself, notably in Paris for several years, where I was able to initially claim mastery with certification at both levels 1 and 2, as well as training on the Grasshopper plug-in; and presently in Cary, North Carolina, in the United States. "Deconstructed Magnolia" is the first project and dates from 2019, with "La Flèche at Notre-Dame de Paris" the latest, constructed during 2023 and 2024. Additional projects will be added in time (with some represented already with just one image each here). Immediate additions will include studies of the fifth-floor, street-facing, and memorable apartment on boulevard Saint-Michel in the 5th arrondissement in Paris that was my home base for four years, and where this independent work began.
